AXA Health EAP overview
The AXA health EAP supports over 500 companies worldwide. In April 2025 they partnered with Spectrum.Life to relaunch the service with enhanced features including remote health assessments, wellbeing coaching and a library of online content supporting mind, body and life.
Central to the new proposition is the addition of Health Score assessments, providing businesses with an aggregated view of the health of their business and facilitating personalised recommendations and next-step guidance for users (which could include an e-learning course, lifestyle tips, or signposting to more dedicated support).
In general, Trustpilot reviews are positive with the only sticking point being that the referral and assessment system for employees to access counselling can be slow and frustrating. Users call out long wait times and examples of support being denied if it’s not deemed severe enough or is considered to be a pre-existing condition.
Let’s take a look at AXA Health’s offering in more detail.

Counselling on AXA Health EAP
There are two versions of the EAP available – essential and premier – with only the premier version including access to between five and eight counselling sessions from as little as £7.50 per employee per year.
This part of the offering is referred to as “scheduled, short-term counselling”. This means that “based on an assessment of their requirements, your employee will be steered towards the right level of help at the right time”. It’s unclear what percentage of employees are directed towards counselling sessions versus self-guided wellness resources (which are the focal point of Spectrum.Life’s offering).
If they are referred on for further support, employees will be connected with “an extended affiliate network of more than 2,500 counsellors and mental health practitioners”. From recent interactions with users (see below), it looks like AXA are therefore not directly responsible for the quality of the counselling service provided.

Integrations
AXA Health does not currently offer any external integrations with other software or tools, however for large corporate clients the EAP will be integrated within the AXA Health app. For smaller companies the EAP can only be accessed using the online portal.
Confidentiality
AXA Health clearly states that the EAP service is completely confidential, and they don’t share any personal details of any conversation with employers unless there is concern that someone may be a serious risk to themselves or others, or if there is a legal obligation to do so.
Aggregated data is provided on the number of users and the types of mental health challenges faced - but this is aggregated and anonymised. No identifiable information about an individual would be shared with employers.

Best reviews for AXA Health EAP
Fast referrals once approved
Once members are approved for treatment, the process of referral is straightforward and the wide range of health services available on Axa get shouted out frequently.
Extensive network of specialists
Users also highlight that the list of approved specialists and the quality of care received for physical health conditions is excellent, and in particular there are many reviews sharing positive experiences with cancer treatment.
Bad reviews for AXA Health EAP
Long wait times
Many negative reviews mention the process to access treatment and speak to a counsellor is slow, disjointed and frustrating. There are also incidences of eventually being denied treatment after waiting several weeks for a response.
Barriers to access mental health support
Several reviews criticise the additional barriers AXA put in place for mental health versus physical health treatment. Reviews mention restrictions on the number of sessions available, and excessive clinical reviews which are distressing when someone’s really struggling with their mental health.
In Summary
AXA Health is one of the most affordable EAP options provided by private health insurers, with essential cover starting from just £3.20 per employee per year. They offer good, basic cover with 24/7 helpline and access to a wide range of wellbeing resources online.
They work with a good range of healthcare professionals which makes the referral process quick once treatment is approved and customer service is quick to support on any claims that need to be made.
There are two issues that are highlighted by the reviews. AXA’s EAP requires employees to be triaged which seems like a slow and disjointed process requiring several rounds of calls and assessments, and they are sometimes rejected for treatment if it meet the policy requirements or is considered a pre-existing condition. If you are looking for EAPs that provide next-day counselling sessions with no approvals needed, try one of the other top 5 EAPs.
