What is an EAP helpline?
An employee assistance programme (EAP) helpline is a service that companies can pay for to give their employees access to short-term counselling and other professional guidance.
An EAP helpline isn't just a service for employees in crisis, but also a proactive resource for anyone needing support, advice or a safe space to be heard. That could include someone who's struggling with work-related challenges (like stress or burnout), a mental health condition (like anxiety, depression or ADHD) or big life events like (like a divorce or bereavement).
Why it matters
For employees, an EAP helpline provides easy access to support from a qualified counsellor to help with anything that's impacting their mental health or wellbeing. It's free for them to use (vs paying privately), they can get help quickly (vs joining an NHS waiting list), and it's fully confidential (vs opening up to someone at work).
For managers, an EAP helpline is also a useful resource to get professional guidance on how to support others in their team who are having a tough time, and somewhere to signpost them on for further support from an expert.
For the business, the core purpose of an EAP helpline is to fulfil your legal duty of care towards employees in the workplace. In a broader sense, investing in your team's wellbeing also helps improve focus and productivity, build emotional resilience, and therefore reduce the number of staff who take time off work or leave the company due to poor mental health.
How does it work?
Spill’s EAP helpline is a fully confidential service that provides immediate in-moment support and guidance for employees dealing with personal or work-related challenges.
Your company will be assigned a dedicated senior counsellor, who will be available to your team 24/7 via Slack, Teams or Email.
Employees can message back and forth with the counsellor, or book in a video call at any time to talk about how they’re feeling and build a tailored plan to help get them back on track as quickly as possible. Depending on the situation, they may also guide employees towards relevant resources, policies, and further treatment if needed.
