What is structured EAP
counselling?
Structured counselling is a series of ongoing therapy sessions provided to employees as part of the overall EAP service to address personal, emotional, or work-related issues that are affecting their wellbeing or performance at work.
This higher level of support is recommended for employees who are experiencing longer-term or more severe mental health challenges (like severe anxiety or depression) and are really struggling to cope, or having to take time off work to rest and recover.
Structured EAP counselling sessions usually take place over a number of weeks to explore issues on a much deeper level than a one-off session, aiming to develop coping strategies and improve quality of life.
Why it matters
A course of structured EAP counselling can be life-changing for someone who is really struggling with their mental health. Unlike a one-off session, a structured course of treatment gives the time and space to address the root cause of their issues, and create meaningful and lasting change.
When an employee is able to properly heal and develop practical strategies to manage their symptoms moving forward, the business benefits too. Happy workers are more resilient, more focussed and more engaged with their work – and much less likely to need time off work or leave the company due to poor mental health.
How does it work?
Spill’s structured EAP counselling is a fully confidential service that provides longer-term support and guidance for employees dealing with severe mental health challenges.
Employees will be referred on for extended support by your dedicated company counsellor, and matched with a specialist who has the most relevant experience to their specific situation (e.g. a specialised bereavement or grief counsellor).
A course of treatment is typically 6-12 sessions long. Employees will speak with the same therapist in each session, and usually meet once a week for the duration. This format has been around since the invention of talk therapy in the early 19th century by Freud, and to this day remains the most effective way to support somebody who is really struggling with their mental health.
