ComPsych EAP overview
ComPsych, founded in Chicago in 1984 and still founder-led, describes itself as the world's largest EAP provider: 75,000+ customer organisations, 160 million+ covered lives across 200 countries, and 40 percent of the Fortune 500 under its GuidanceResources brand. It serves UK employers through a London call centre and a UK affiliate counsellor network.
The model is a classic global EAP: a 24/7 line or app where a masters-level Guidance Consultant does intake and matches the employee to a counsellor in the affiliate network.
Buyer reviews on Shortlister run warm (4.6), while end-user signals run cold: the GuidanceNow app scores 2.3 on Google Play and the thin consumer review base is dominated by complaints about actually reaching a counsellor.

Counselling on ComPsych
Employees contact ComPsych by phone, the GuidanceResources Online portal or the GuidanceNow app. After intake, they are matched to network counsellors for a fixed number of sessions per issue per year set by the employer's contract; ComPsych publicly references models up to eight sessions with high resolution rates.
In-person, phone and video counselling are offered, plus digital CBT and wellbeing coaching. Delivery is by affiliate licensed counsellors rather than an employed clinical team.
The recurring end-user complaint, particularly in the US where most reviews originate, is being referred to therapists who are not taking new clients, with intake processes that reviewers say create more anxiety than they resolve. UK-specific service data is not published.

Best reviews for ComPsych
Breadth and global reach
HR buyers rate the one-stop bundle of EAP, legal, financial, work-life and absence management across 200 countries; it suits multinationals wanting one vendor everywhere.
Comprehensive resources
Users and admins point to the large self-help library, webinars and care-path tools alongside counselling.
Bad reviews for ComPsych
Hard to reach a counsellor
Reviewers describe long-winded intake, referrals to therapists who are not taking patients, and processes that create more anxiety than anything else.
Poor app and admin experience
The GuidanceNow app sits at 2.3 on Google Play with login failures and broken links, and claims processes are described as slow and bureaucratic.
In Summary
ComPsych is the incumbent's incumbent: the biggest independent EAP on earth, procurement-friendly, and everywhere the Fortune 500 is. If your board wants a name nobody gets fired for buying, this is that name.
The gap between buyer satisfaction (4.6 on Shortlister) and user experience (2.3 app rating, access complaints) is the story. EAPs are judged at the moment a struggling employee tries to get help, and that is exactly where the affiliate-network intake model creaks.
UK employers should also note the minimum group size (100 employees via its listed channel) and that service evidence for the UK specifically is thin.
How ComPsych compares to Spill
ComPsych routes a struggling employee through intake, matching and an affiliate network, with a fixed number of sessions per issue. Spill removes every step: one click in Slack or MS Teams books a session with a BACP-registered counsellor from the top 5 percent of applicants, usually the same day, and therapy is unlimited rather than rationed.
ComPsych's economics favour coverage across vast populations with a 100-employee minimum. Spill has no minimum team size, publishes its pricing from £75 a month, and runs on a rolling 30 day contract with no exit fees, so the service has to stay good to stay paid.
Choose ComPsych if you are a multinational enterprise consolidating EAP, absence and work-life services into one global vendor. Choose Spill if you are UK-based and want unlimited therapy without intake friction, from a provider with no minimum headcount.
