OpenUp overview

OpenUp is an Amsterdam-based platform founded in 2020 by a registered healthcare psychologist, serving 2,000+ organisations and roughly 600,000 covered employees and family members across the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, France and Belgium. Clients include KPMG, Deutsche Bank, Rituals and HelloFresh, and it raised a 20 million euro round in March 2026 to expand across Europe.

It positions itself explicitly against traditional EAPs: direct psychologist access, no waiting lists, no gatekeeping, with a preventative, check-in-led philosophy.

Its public review base is small but strong: 4.8 on G2 from HR buyers, and a 4.8 Google rating promoted on its own site.

Counselling on OpenUp

Employees self-register and book 1:1 sessions directly, with no HR approval and no triage. OpenUp says sessions can be booked within 36 hours, often same or next day, and its FAQ states each 1:1 session lasts 25 minutes with a personalised follow-up plan.

Sessions are delivered by certified psychologists plus lifestyle experts and financial coaches, 250+ professionals in total, in 40+ languages with cultural matching. Family members can use the service too, and a 24/7 human-staffed helpline covers urgent moments.

It is explicitly early, short-term support rather than clinical treatment for severe conditions, with onward signposting. G2 reviewers confirm the speed in practice, though one flags thin therapist coverage in distant time zones such as Australia.

Best reviews for OpenUp

Fast, frictionless access

Reviewers praise seeing a psychologist within a day, without approvals or waiting lists, with near 24/7 and weekend availability that drives real uptake compared with old EAPs.

Measurable impact and strong support

HR teams report drops in absenteeism and value the monthly reports, launch content and responsive customer success team.

Accessible form of good help
What I really like about OpenUp is that it is always very quickly available. The moment you or a colleague is dealing with something, you can refer them to OpenUp and the colleague can quickly get help. This makes it very accessible.

Absenteeism has dropped significantly
They have fun content that is easy to share with employees. The conversations with the psychologists are also very nice, as you receive good tips and get tools to work on yourself.

Bad reviews for OpenUp

Coverage gaps outside Europe

International buyers flag that colleagues in distant time zones have few available therapists, so global teams may find the network Europe-centric.

Group session scheduling

Masterclasses cluster on the same days and times, making them hard to attend, and some feel the content leans toward lifestyle topics over core mental health.

Few therapists in far time zones
We are an international company with several offices around the world. We understood that our colleagues in Australia sometimes don't have that many options yet to talk to available therapists, given the different timezones.

In Summary

OpenUp is the continental European take on the modern EAP: psychologist-led, prevention-first, fast, and genuinely well liked by the HR teams who buy it. For companies with workforces across the Netherlands, Germany and France, it is arguably the strongest option in this list.

The trade-offs for a UK buyer: sessions are 25 minutes rather than a full therapy hour, the model is coaching-inflected early support with signposting for anything clinical, and the UK is one of five markets rather than home turf.

Its review base, while glowing, is small and buyer-skewed, so ask for UK-specific usage and satisfaction data in the sales process.

How OpenUp compares to Spill

These are the two most similar products on this list: both self-booked, both fast, both allergic to triage. The differences are depth and home market. Spill sessions are full 50 minute therapy sessions, unlimited, with BACP-registered counsellors from the top 5 percent of applicants; OpenUp's 1:1s are 25 minute check-ins built for early support.

Spill is also UK-native: UK professional body registration, pricing published in pounds (from £75 a month on a rolling 30 day contract with no exit fees), booking in one click inside Slack and MS Teams where UK teams already work, and same-day availability 7am to 9:30pm, 7 days a week.

Choose OpenUp if your workforce is centred on the Netherlands, Germany or France and prevention-style check-ins fit your culture. Choose Spill if your team is UK-based and you want unlimited full-length therapy rather than 25 minute check-ins.
