Personify Health

EAP

See a comprehensive overview of the pros and cons of Personify Health, formerly Virgin Pulse, for UK employers.

Personify Health (Virgin Pulse) overview

Virgin Pulse no longer exists as a brand: it merged with US health plan administrator HealthComp in November 2023 in a deal reported at 3 billion dollars and unveiled the Personify Health name in February 2024, with the member apps renamed through early 2025. The combined company claims 7,000+ client organisations and around 20 million lives, with a UK office in Leeds.

The product UK employers can buy is the wellbeing engagement platform: activity challenges, wearable syncing, habit-building Journeys, points and rewards, health assessments and a partner marketplace. The health plan administration side is US-only.

The apps rate strongly (4.4 Google Play from 90,000+ reviews), while its thin Trustpilot profile (2.6) is dominated by complaints about rewards not being credited.

Counselling on Personify Health

This is the key point for an EAP comparison: Personify Health is not an EAP and does not provide counselling or therapy. Its mental health offering is next-generation coaching, with trained mental health coaches providing support calls and plans for stress, sleep and anxiety.

For higher-acuity needs, the platform navigates members onward to the employer's own health plan, EAP or marketplace partners such as Headspace. There is no defined session entitlement, no BACP or UKCP clinical framework, and no crisis or critical incident service of its own.

A UK employer buying Personify Health still needs a separate EAP for therapy. It is an engagement layer, not a care layer.

Other services on Personify Health

Integrations

Broad and genuinely good: Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin and its own Max Buzz tracker, MyFitnessPal, HR and benefits systems, SSO, plus the partner marketplace. For US clients it also runs health plan administration and care navigation.

Confidentiality

Personal tracking data is not shared with employers at an individual level, though app reviewers voice unease about how much data the programme collects, and the Google Play data-safety listing notes data may be shared with third parties.

Extras

Step challenges, Journeys micro-learning, daily habit cards, rewards engines that US clients often tie to insurance premium discounts, health assessments and benefits navigation.

Best reviews for Personify Health

Engagement at scale

Users like the challenges, points, wearable syncing and having everything in one place, reflected in strong app store averages across hundreds of thousands of ratings.

Breadth of resources

Reviewers value the health content, Journeys, coaching, and rewards that convert to real money when the system works.

Lots of useful resources
I've had this app for over 2 years, as it was promoted by my work for health and well-being. There are lots of useful resources to learn about various health topics. You can track your health metrics, and set it up for reminders.

Bad reviews for Personify Health

Sync and rewards failures

The most persistent complaint is trackers dropping connections or points not crediting, which for US users can mean losing hundreds of dollars in incentives, compounded by slow support.

Forced, gimmicky wellness

Many users are required to use it by their employer and describe the daily-card model as tedious box-ticking, with privacy unease about employer wellness data collection.

Forced to use it for work
This might be the worst app on the market. Forced to use it for work benefits program. It stopped tracking my Fitbit, so I got their fitness tracker which never stayed connected for more than 24 hours.

Rewards never credited
Virgin Pulse never credited a $20 gift card earnings I expected. I gave them proof with screenshots on the activity I completed. Their customer service gave vague answers with no resolution and did not respond to my follow ups.

In Summary

Personify Health is a wellness engagement machine, and judged as that, a good one: slick apps, deep wearable integrations and gamification that genuinely moves participation numbers in large workforces.

But it does not do the job an EAP does. There is no therapy, no clinical framework and no crisis pathway; mental health support means coaching calls and signposting. UK buyers sometimes discover this after purchase.

Its centre of gravity is also firmly American: the rewards-to-insurance mechanics, the TPA business and most of the review base are US phenomena. UK employers are buying the engagement layer only.

How Personify Health compares to Spill

These products solve different problems. Personify Health drives participation in wellness activity; Spill provides the care itself: unlimited therapy with BACP-registered counsellors from the top 5 percent of applicants, booked in one click inside Slack or MS Teams, usually for the same day. Engagement points do not treat anyone.

Many companies pair a platform like this with a therapy layer, and at £75 a month on a rolling 30 day contract with no exit fees, Spill is the therapy layer that switches on in hours. If budget forces a choice, care beats gamification.

Choose Personify Health if you want a gamified wellness programme to lift activity metrics across a large workforce. Choose Spill if you want someone struggling on a Tuesday to be in a therapy session by Tuesday afternoon.
